OpenOffice.org 3.2, NeoOffice.org κλπ.

The OpenOffice.org Community this morning announced the release of the latest version (3.2) of its personal productivity suite, and simultaneously announced that the software has been downloaded an impressive 300 million times in total since its public debut in April 2002.

According to the statement, OpenOffice.org 3 recorded over half of that number from the central download site alone.

(Note: title and first para initially mentioned 200 million downloads, which was 100 million short of the claimed total number of downloads)

Improvements in the latest version of OpenOffice are speed tweaks, new features, enhanced compatibility with other office software programs, bug fixes and the addressing of potential security vulnerabilities.

In case you’re not familiar with OpenOffice: it’s basically a free, open-source alternative to Microsoft’s Office desktop software suite, offering basic components of productivity tools such as a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, graphics, formula and database capabilities.

Καλές οι προσπάθειες του OpenOffice.org αλλά προτιμώ το NeoOffice.org που έχει και κάποια χαρακτηριστικά που το καθιστούν καλύτερη Mac εφαρμογή όπως επίσης και εκδόσεις για τους PowerPC.

Βέβαια και τα δύο προγράμματα μου θυμίζουν όπως και το Micro$oft Office, φιλοσοφίες για υπολογιστές πίσω στη δεκαετία του 1980. 30 χρόνια πίσω είναι τα μυαλά τους και έτσι βάζουν και τα δικά σας μυαλά να λειτουργούν. ΣΗΜΕΙΩΣΗ: 30 χρόνια πίσω στην πληροφορική είναι σαν να λέμε ότι είμαστε ακόμη πίσω στην παλαιολιθική εποχή!

Μιλώντας για το Micro$oft Office υπόσχεται η Micro$oft ότι η νέα Mac έκδοση, που ΘΑ βγει μέχρι το τέλος τους 2010, θα υποστηρίζει Mac χαρακτηριστικά που τα θεωρούν καλύτερα από τα Windows.

While the 2008 version offered strong file compatibility with Windows, this time around the company has focused on providing a more consistent interface and functionality. A customisable ribbon bar replaces Office 2008’ Elements Gallery, and the overall look and feel will be familiar to Office users but more closely follows Mac OS X design conventions.

“This is the version that everyone wanted,” Han-Yi Shaw of Microsoft’s Mac Business Unit told Macworld. “Because we’re die-hard Mac users, we look at the [Office] technology and try to translate it. Following the Apple design philosophy really takes you in the right direction.”

In a real sense, that means Microsoft has relied heavily on Mac OS X’s Cocoa development framework to provide a Mac look-and-feel, and uses features such as Core Animation to provide smooth animation of onscreen elements.

Να μου λείπει. Καλύτερα TextEdit παρά Micro$oft Office: Mac οποιαδήποτε έκδοση. Δεν τρελάθηκα που θα φορτώσω αυτό το απαίσιο λογισμικό που με κάνει να χάνω 6+ εκατοστά στην οθόνη μου από εργαλεία που συνήθως ΔΕΝ χρειάζεται το 90% των χρηστών το 99% του χρόνου που δουλεύουν με το Micro$oft Office. Ακόμη και η έκδοση Micro$oft Office: Mac 2008 ΔΕΝ είναι τόσο άχρηστη σε αυτόν τον τομέα!

Βέβαια εγώ προτιμώ WriteRoom περισσότερο αλλά εγώ είμαι τρελός. Δεν ξέρω από αυτά.
