M$N Messenger για Mac

Ξέρω ότι υπάρχει πολύς κόσμος εκεί έξω που είναι για δέσιμο, για χέσιμο και για ξεχέσιμο.

Έχω πει πάρα πολλές φορές ότι είστε τούβλα που χρησιμοποιείτε οτιδήποτε της Micro$oft. Εσείς εκεί.

Έτσι λοιπόν και η Micro$oft έφτιαξε και για το Mac το M$N Messenger. Ή όποιο πρόγραμμα και να 'ναι αυτό γιατί σίγουρα δεν έχει σχέση με την έκδοση των Windows. Τέλος, πάντων. Είχαν υποσχεθεί ότι κάποια στιγμή θα δώσουν και στην έκδοση του Mac τη δυνατότητα για ήχο και εικόνα (βίντεο). Τώρα αυτή την υπόσχεση, κλασσικά, την καθυστερούν για κάποια στιγμή στο 2010.

Here’s the update: progress has been slower than expected due to the challenge of connecting to the most current A/V code running on the Windows Live servers. We will not have a beta available in 2009, but we are close: we are in “dogfood”, and we plan to have the beta available to you by next March. We know how anxious you are to use this new version, but I want to ensure we are delivering a top quality experience before we ship, and we will have that in March.

Το πρόβλημά μου όμως δεν είναι απλά ότι ΕΣΕΙΣ ακόμη ποθείτε το τρισάθλιο M$N. Όχι, ούτε καν που θα αργήσει να κυκλοφορήσει. Το πρόβλημά μου είναι ότι κάθεστε και ανέχεστε ΧΩΡΙΣ κανένα πρόβλημα τα ψέματα της Micro$oft και ακόμη χειρότερα ότι τα μεταδίδετε!

Τι εννοώ; Πολύ απλά. Το M$N Messenger στην έκδοση για Mac υποστηρίζει ΗΔΗ ήχο και εικόνα (βίντεο). Απλά. Πρέπει να πληρώσετε γι αυτή τη δυνατότητα όπως επίσης και να αγοράσετε επιπλέον λογισμικό της Micro$oft για επιχειρήσεις ώστε να μπορέσετε να το λειτουργήσετε με δυνατότητα βίντεο. Με λίγα λόγια. Δουλευόμαστε μεταξύ μας έτσι; ΧΑ! Λες και είναι η πρώτη φορά αυτή.

SMS vs Internet = 1-0

Human beings can’t seem to stay quiet for even short periods of time. It’s chatter, chatter, chatter, chatter. Thankfully, we’ve found a new, quieter (though for some no less annoying) way to converse: texting. How popular? Four billion a day and growing.

Figures released by the Cellular Telephone Industries Association (CTIA) say that during the first six months of 2009 some 740 billion text messages were sent. That breaks down to about 4.1 billion per day, or 17 text message each day from data-capable phones. (My thumbs ache just thinking about it.)

CTIA also notes that as the number of text messages rose, the length of voice calls has fallen. Call length peaked at 3.13 minutes in 2007, and since dropped dropped to 2.03 minutes--the lowest average CTIA has recorded.

Το VLC για Mac είναι νεκρό!

Έτσι λέγανε τα τρομπόνια, οι κακούργες γλώσσες. S00R που λέει κι ένας φίλος μου.

VLC for Mac death is "greatly exaggerated" / What is Lunettes?

VLC for Mac is being maintained. However the old Cocoa graphical interface of VLC, is not being maintained at this time.

The reason is that we are in the process of rewriting a new interface for VLC. Its codename is Lunettes.

Why a rewrite? This is something really easy to see. VLC for Mac is just not "Mac" enough.

So far, we could name 3 reasons for that:

VLC for Mac must attract designers.

They can't easily give a refresh of the graphical interface.

Hence, we have decided to offer to designer the possibility to edit via a simple text file the look of VLC. Even Windows and Fullscreen Head-Up-Display can be changed using CSS.

VLC for Mac's interface code comes from the 2000s.

We need to refresh it.

We want to use VLCKit which is pure Cocoa, Objective-C 2.0 with bindings supports. This will help us concentrating on features.

As a positive side effects, we'll not use old non-64 bits compatible APIs.

VLC for Mac needs a good interface to be the best Video Player.

We want to make sure you'll get the best experience ever when watching your favorites TV shows or Movies using VLC.

For instance, if I am watching a TV show, and then quit Lunettes. At next launch Lunettes will offer you to go back to where you were.

Then, we added a better way to visualize the media discovery. This is a seldom known feature of VLC. Now, if you are on a local network that streams TV content (Freebox), Lunettes will automatically show them.

Then the famous playlist fades out: It is not visible by default, and you don't have to use it anymore.

Also in fullscreen you can now scroll through your playlists or TV channels.

And finally Lunettes is 64 bits.

Η Micro$oft και τα Windows 8

It has been months since Windows 7's successor has entered the planning and early development stages, and already Microsoft is taking aim at its competition deep inside its headquarters. At least two of them, Apple and Google, are being scrutinized especially closely, according to sources within the company. Despite the strong start Windows 7 has had, and Windows' huge installed base, the company realizes that there are new challenges in the changing marketplace that have to be met head-on if the Windows brand is to continue to flourish.

Specifically, Microsoft is taking note of competitive pressures from Google, with its Android and Chrome operating systems, saying that the search giant "poses a whole new set of challenges." As for Apple, Microsoft noted that the company could not be forgotten, because there would still be the "the traditional competition" from Cupertino. Linux was not explicitly mentioned, though this is likely because Microsoft believes it poses a bigger threat in the business space, and sources say this particular discussion looked at the consumer-facing aspects of the Windows brand.

Μμμμ. Windows η εγγύηση. Micro$oft η εγγύηση. Με λίγα λόγια, εκεί στη Micro$oft, δεν έχουν ιδέα πως και τι θα κάνουν με τα Windows 8 ή όπως αλλιώς και να τα λένε και απλά περιμένουν να δουν για ΠΟΛΛΟΣΤΗ φορά τι θα κάνουν οι αντίπαλοί της και θα αρχίσουν πάλι τις φθηνές και κακές αντιγραφές. Κλασσικά ότι κάνουν όλες αυτές τις δεκαετίες.

Από την άλλη, επειδή μιλάμε για την Micro$oft μπορεί να μην αντιγράψει απλά, αλλά να κλέψει και κώδικα τρίτων στα ίσα!!! Εξάλλου δεν είναι και η πρώτη φορά που το κάνει αυτό:

It's getting closer and closer to check-writing time for Steve Ballmer, as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has just upheld a decision that would see Microsoft Word and Office banned from sale starting January 11. If you'll recall, Microsoft lost a patent infringement suit against XML specialists i4i back in May when it was found that Word's handling of .xml, .docx, and .docm files infringed upon i4i's patented XML handling algorithms, but the injunction against further Word sales was put on hold pending the results of this appeal. Now that Microsoft has lost once again, we'd expect either another appeal and request for the injunction to be stayed, this time to the Supreme Court, or for a settlement between these two that would end this whole mess right now. We'll see what happens -- stay tuned.

Microsoft Corporation has announced the re-release of the installation tool for Windows 7 operating system that was pulled out earlier last month, after being accused of copying open source code from the “Imagemaster” open-source project. Recently, Microsoft had stated that it had infact delayed the relaunch of the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool (WUDT), as the software require further testing.

The relaunch of the installation tool is now under the guidelines provided by GPLv2(GNU General Public License). The whole fiasco surrounding the Windows 7 installation tool was about the neglect on part of Microsoft for not releasing the details about the source code of the WDUT. The new guidelines for the WDUT have led to the compartmentalization of the tool that would in turn prove to be more complicated for the users.

Πέθανε ο Kim Peek σε ηλικία 58 ετών

;'(

Ο Kim Peek, ο πολλαπλές φορές ιδιοφυής άνθρωπος, απεβίωσε...

Kim Peek was 58. His father, Fran, says Peek had a major heart attack Saturday morning and was pronounced dead at a hospital in the Salt Lake City suburb of Murray.

Peek was a savant with a remarkable memory and inspired writer Barry Morrow when he wrote "Rain Man," the 1988 movie that won four Academy Awards.

Fran Peek said his son met Morrow at a convention in the early 1980s and the writer was taken with Peek's knack for retaining everything he heard. Morrow wrote the script, and the movie went on to win Oscars for best film and best actor for Dustin Hoffman, whose repetitive rants about being an excellent driver and the "People's Court" about to start were a hit with moviegoers.

Although the character was technically fictional, Fran Peek said his son was every bit as amazing as Hoffman's portrayal of him. And Kim's true character showed when he toured the world, helping dispel misconceptions about mental disabilities.

"It was just unbelievable, all the things that he knew," Fran Peek said Monday. "He traveled 5,500 miles short of 3 million air miles and talked to nearly 60 million people — half have been students."

In his later years, Peek was classified as a "mega-savant" who was a genius in about 15 different subjects, from history and literature and geography to numbers, sports, music and dates. But his motor skills were limited; he couldn't perform some simple tasks like dressing himself.

NASA scientists had been studying Peek, hoping that technology used to study the effects of space travel on the brain would help explain his mental capabilities.

Fran Peek says the funeral will be next Tuesday in Taylorsville. Details were pending.

Steve Jobs ftw!

Apple CEO Steve Jobs loomed over the first decade of the 21st century like no other man.

At 54, Jobs and his accomplishments are legendary. The Apple co-founder is known for an exacting attention to detail and a keen knack for predicting a trend—not to mention a fixation on elegant design. He is widely considered the archetypal tech visionary of our time.

Skeptical? Consider these breakthroughs of the past 10 years: the Apple retail store (2001), the iPod (2003), the Apple iTunes Store (2003), the iPhone (2007), the Apple App Store (2008). Apple churned out a line of stunning laptops (the MacBook Air) and desktops (iMacs) throughout the decade, but Jobs was intensely focused on expanding the company's reach.

Accordingly, Jobs reached into the consumer electronics market to grab market share for new types of devices. In doing so, he used his formidable business acumen and persuasive negotiating skills to transform the way that the music, video, and cellular phone industries do business.

Jobs fully understood computers had moved beyond Excel spreadsheets. Home users were creating audio playlists and burning CDs, editing photos, and watching video. His achievement is that he was able to bridge the home computer with a line of consumer electronics that entertain, connect, and engage.

Δεξιά κι αριστερά βραβεύεται ο Steve Jobs και πάλι λίγα λένε. Ο άνθρωπος είναι ζωντανός μύθος! Αν δεν ήτανε αυτός, ακόμη MS-DOS και Unix τερματικά θα είχαμε όλοι μας. Αφήστε να μη μιλήσω για τα MP3 και τα δήθεν κινητά που θα είχαμε! Και φυσικά είναι ο μοναδικός άνθρωπος που προσπαθεί να ανοίξει την αγορά των ταινιών, της μουσικής, κλπ. στο διαδίκτυο και όχι μόνο, πηγαίνοντας κόντρα 110% στις βιομηχανίες μουσικής και κινηματογράφου! Όταν οι άλλοι κλάνουν μέντες και το βάζουν στα πόδια, ο Steve Jobs είναι εκεί να μας πάει μπροστά!

As a rule I try to avoid making New Year's resolutions I can't keep, but this year is going to be different. After a tumultuous and frustration filled relationship with iTunes I've finally decided to bite the bullet and file for divorce.

Like many relationships, my time with iTunes started out with intense passion and infatuation. It's slick, sexy interface instantly caught my attention. As things progressed I developed a deep devotion to iTunes as it selflessly synched music across to my iPod. As the years progressed however, the relationship began to sour.

iTunes began to develop a middle aged spread, becoming slower and fatter with successive update. The breaking point finally came as iTunes annoying habits finally tried my patience beyond reasonable patience.

Whilst I could tolerate sluggishness, having iTunes refuse to let me share content between PCs without a convoluted authorisation process, or attempting to install the in-laws (QuickTime and Safari) on my PC just pushed things to the point where our relationship had become unworkable.

Ευρώπη VS Micro$oft 1-0;

BERLIN — European regulators dropped their antitrust case against Microsoft on Wednesday after the software maker agreed to offer consumers a choice of rival Web browsers. The move ended a decade of legal strife that cost the world's top maker of software 1.67 billion euros in fines and penalties and forced it to alter the way it did business in Europe.

Neelie Kroes, the European competition commissioner, said the agreement with Microsoft was an “early Christmas present for more than hundreds of millions of Europeans” who would get “effective and unbiased choice” between competing browsers.

The agreement, announced in Brussels by the European competition commissioner, Neelie Kroes, calls for Microsoft to give users of its Windows operating system a choice of 11 browsers that compete with its Internet Explorer, made by companies like Apple, Google and Mozilla.

The five-year deal is an unprecedented concession for a company that, since its founding by Bill Gates and his partners in 1975, had largely defined, exploited and defended the advantages and rights of proprietary, commercial software.

When Microsoft first entered the cross hairs of European regulators in 1998 for including its media player with Windows, which operates 90 percent of the computers around the world, and for its use of confidential coding to favor its desktop and server software, the company fought back with legal guns blazing.

Microsoft lawyers argued that the commission's very logic was at fault; that computer users routinely used more than one media player and that bundling applications in one product was not in itself an abuse of market dominance.

But the commission, in 2004, and the appeals court, in 2007, dismissed Microsoft's arguments, and Microsoft abandoned its efforts to overturn the ruling in October 2007 after paying the equivalent of $2.4 billion in fines and penalties.

The outcome Wednesday, said Graham Taylor, the chief executive of Open Forum Europe, puts an exclamation point on the regulatory mood in Europe.

"The European settlement sends an unambiguous message to the market: software lock-in is dead," said Mr. Taylor, whose group supports the open-source movement. "Competitive, free choice should be the norm."

Καλύτερα να μασάς παρά να μιλάς Κύριε Mozilla

If you download a fresh copy of Firefox, you'll note that the default search engine is not whatever you already have picked in all your other browsers. Instead, Mozilla chooses Firefox's default search engine, and the list of search providers in the accompanying drop down menu, based on their popularity. Thus, Bing isn't one of the choices.

This might seem a bit odd to readers who remember last week's comments from a Mozilla executive urging Firefox users to ditch Google for Bing due to privacy policies. In order to switch—or even to try the service in the search bar—users have to download the Bing add-on for Firefox; they can't simply change the drop-down choice.

Wondering why this was, we contacted Asa Dotzler, Mozilla's director of community development, the same man who recently switched from Google to Bing and used his personal blog to try to get other Firefox users to do the same. Is Bing not an option in Firefox because there is some kind of Google-Mozilla conspiracy going on? After all, the larger majority of Mozilla's revenue has always come from Google (about 97 percent). Most of Mozilla's revenue is still being generated through search deals with Google and other popular website operators, and Google has recently committed to extending its contract with Mozilla until 2011.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- A common sense interpretation of Apple(AAPL Quote) fundamentals leads most investors to conclude that this stock should go straight up. Mac sales were up 74% in October and November, the iPhone is on track to have its first quarter of unit sales of 10 million, the iPod Touch continues to gain market share among gamers, the Tablet will be released in 2010. But for some reason, the stock sits dormant in December; if only investing were so easy.

Common sense wins in the long run, but the short run can be dominated by sophisticated trading strategies that test your conviction. Apple happens to be the investment vehicle of choice, not only for the longs but the shorts as well. For many of the same reasons you love Apple stock, the shorts do, too.

Apple Big in Japan;

Apple continues to add more markets for the iPhone worldwide, and the strategy is paying off. The latest analysis from mobile ad firm AdMob reveals that the number of unique users of iPhone OS-based devices is now split 50-50 between the US and the rest of the world. Overall, the number of unique users hitting AdMob's network from an iPhone or iPod touch has grown 150 percent over the last year. Japan has seen the biggest increase—over 300 percent—which may help explain why the iPhone commanded nearly half of the Japanese smartphone market in 2009.

Τα σπάει λέμε το iPhone ΑΚΟΜΗ και στην Ιαπωνία! Πως να μην τα σπάει αφού κάνει πράγματα με τρόπους που ΙΣΩΣ οι άλλοι κατασκευαστές τα κάνουν κάποτε. Βέβαια οι κακές γλώσσες λένε πως η αγορά των AppPhones δεν είναι μεγάλη στην Ιαπωνία. Ε, και; Και μικρή να είναι εφόσον κατάφερε η Apple όχι απλά να είναι παρών εκεί (που ΑΚΟΜΗ και σήμερα πολύς κόσμος θέλει να πιστεύει ότι είναι άσχετη εταιρία με κινητά) αλλά και να πάρει κεφάλια, λέει πολλά για το πόσο ΕΞΑΙΡΕΤΙΚΑ καλά πηγαίνει η Apple ;)

James Cameron's AVATAR

Put simply, Avatar is the most visually fantastic film I've ever seen. It will be hailed as the groundbreaking 3D release of its time while setting a new standard by which all blockbusters are measured. Yes, it's that good.

I'm not going to talk about plot (or that I thought to myself, Dances with Wolves in space more than once). I'm not going to talk about dialog or pacing (or that the limited narration was totally unnecessary). There are other reviews, more reviewy type reviews, that have all that covered. I'm not going to spoil anything, either. Heck, I'm not even going to talk about Avatar...not just yet.

Avatar may be hurt by the curse of expectation, and it's hard to keep the message that MOVIE MAKING HAS BEEN CHANGED FOREVER out of your mind once your butt is actually in a seat in front of the thing. The trailers keep telling us how nothing will ever be the same again, and we know the budget of the movie was anywhere from $200 million to $500 million, depending on what report you're reading. Who knows how much R&D Cameron put into the technology behind the movie.

Even the credits of the film are monstrous: after Industrial Light and Magic and Weta Digital were credited for the special effects, the long line of other effects houses that worked on the movie scrolled by. I lost count of how many different companies leveraged how many different forms of technology to get Avatar filmed. If you're a fan of cinema, no matter how you feel about the trailer, you need to see this movie; it represents the absolute best that technology can give us in film—at least with an unlimited budget and a small city of geniuses working across a decade to bring it to life.

PC vs AppPhones; Μουαχαχαχα.com

Cell phones are nothing but time-wasters. It's time to get rid of them and refocus on the PC.

I suppose this whole thing began a couple of years ago. Now it's completely out of control. At some point cell phones captured the collective consciousness of computer users. Now they're all anyone talks about anymore.

I noticed this phenomenon on a recent podcast I was asked to take part in. The show was supposed to be broadly about tech—computers specifically—but 90 percent of the conversation revolved around the mobile phone, the issues with new handsets, in particular.

The trend is horrid, but it's not it's not the trend that bothers me. What annoys me is the fact that there is little talk about anything other than hardware features. People talk about the screen, the keyboard, the On and Off button, the layout of the icons, etc. etc. Nobody ever talks about the lame applications. Wait, did I say "lame?" Actually, maybe that's the reason.

Εκτός αν είσαι ΜΑΛΑΚΑΣ σαν τον Dvorak και κουβαλάς NetBooks, CrapBooks ή το σταθερό PC σου με την μπαταρία του αυτοκινήτου ή άλλες "εναλλακτικές" λύσεις...

Είπαμε: Αν είσαι ζώο, απλά μεγαλώνεις. Δεν γίνεσαι ξαφνικά άνθρωπος και ούτε κανείς μπορεί να σε κάνει.

Κάτι κάνουν τα Mac

So far, Apple's first fiscal quarter of 2010 is showing signs of becoming another record quarter with big year-over-year increases in Mac sales for October and November. The latest US sales data from market research firm NPD shows Mac sales are up 21 percent for the first two months of the quarter, but that's not the end of the story.

Breaking out the sales data for notebooks and desktops shows a reversal of recent trends where growth came from sales of MacBooks and MacBook Pros. Sales of Apple's portable machines were only up five percent for October and November. However, sales of desktop Macs are up a whopping 74 percent. While revised Nehalem-based Mac Pros are likely moving just fine, chances are that big bump is likely related to the apparently huge demand for Apple's 27" iMac.

Για να δούμε τι θα δούμε. Φαινομενικά, τα Mac τα σπάνε όχι μόνο στην ποιότητα και τις απίστευτες χαμηλές τιμές τους αλλά και στις πωλήσεις!

Ελπίζω να διορθωθούν γρήγορα τα προβλήματα με τα νέα μοντέλα των 27" (καθυστερήσεις στις παραδόσεις, ελαττωματικά μοντέλα, κλπ.) που πολλοί πελάτες της Apple έχουν :( Ίσως γι αυτό στην Ευρώπη τα μοντέλα των 27" να είναι ακόμη πιο δυσεύρετα.

Το καλύτερο ρολόι στον κόσμο γι άνδρες και όχι μόνο

60 λεπτά η ώρα x 24 ώρες η ημέρα = 1440 λεπτά. Απολαύστε αυτό το ιντερνετικό, περίεργο, μοναδικό, πονηρό, ρολόι του μαυροπίνακα. Αφήστε το ανοιχτό σ' ένα browser (ή tab ενός browser κλπ.) μέρα και νύχτα. Βαρετό πάντως δεν το λες αυτό το ρολόι. Πολλά μπορείς να το πεις αλλά βαρετό δε νομίζω.

Εισαγωγή στα 3D γραφικά στο Mac

Since many people probably scoffed at the idea of the Mac as a 3D platform when they read it above, I thought I'd provide a macro-review of OS X as a 3D platform before starting on the workflow article. My Maya 3D skills were picked up on a Windows 2000 Athlon and, at the time, there was no other option. Until OS X came out, the Mac just wasn't a feasible platform for high-end 3D artists. Despite having a few competent programs, the stability problems of OS 9, combined with the terrible multitasking (who'd want their render to stop every time you clicked on a menu?) and the lack of a command line made the Mac more of a chuckle than a consideration for any high-end 3D animator. The video card choices were almost as bad as the 3D technology, and watching Apple fumble its way through Quickdraw 3D (roller-coasters and RAVE!) was awful. Then Steve came riding back in on his turtlenecked stallion and things started to change. OpenGL was officially adopted thanks to the gentle nudges of John Carmack; the popular API even made it into OS 9 but that still wouldn't have been enough to make the system palatable for 3D pros.

After OS X and the Intel transition, the situation greatly improved for 3D on the Mac. Today, the parts are finally all there for a mature 3D platform: the OS, the video hardware, and, most significantly, the software. In the course of doing research for this article, so many Windows 3D application ports were announced for OS X that it no longer surprises me when important niche products like Topogun, Headus UV Layout, or CrazyBump announce an OS X version.

Να σπάνε ακόμη περισσότερα και ακόμη γρηγορότερα τις νέες εκδόσεις των νέων 3D εφαρμογών. Ή/και θα πρέπει οι εταιρίες που βγάζουν αυτά τα προγράμματα να έχουν και ειδικές τιμές για μαθητές, καθηγητές, κλπ.

Η διαφημιστική καμπάνια της δεκαετίας

Apple always diverged from the "speeds and feeds" ads associated with the computer category, but the brand really defined itself with the 2006 launch of TBWA\Media Arts Lab's "Get a Mac" campaign. That series of 60-plus ads brought some humanity into the equation by turning the machines into live-action cartoons. In so doing, the comic spots offer transparent understanding of the aspirations of its audience and how people identify—and connect emotionally—with technology. The genius is in the casting. The Mac guy, Justin Long, is a younger version of Steve Jobs who is casual and comfortable in his skin. PC, personified by John Hodgman, as a rounder, paler Bill Gates, is a well-meaning geek with all kinds of operating problems. For Apple, the campaign managed the neat trick of making the brand look laid back and cool while it mercilessly skewered its rival.

NY Times και AT&T VS iPhone;

iPhone users all over the US generally agree that AT&T's 3G service is nowhere near as stellar as the company claims—we have seen the look on iPhone users' faces when an AT&T commercial brags about the "fastest 3G network." But a recent report concludes that the blame is on Apple's shoddy design, not inadequacies of AT&T's network. We're not convinced this data supports such a conclusion though.

The conventional wisdom, espoused by AT&T's own top executives, is that AT&T simply has not built its network out in the US to support the growing tide of data traffic coming from increasingly popular smartphones. AT&T Mobility's Ralph de la Vega pointed to the iPhone as a top contributor to this problem, even while admitting that the networks in San Francisco and New York City aren't up to AT&T's standards.

1/3 πελάτες των Windows 7 είχανε προβλήματα

Thirty-one percent of users that have been experiencing trouble with Windows 7 have reported problems with upgrading to the operating system. The data comes from consumer helpdesk firm iYogi, which recently conducted a survey of more than 100,000 of its customers. The number means that the majority of problems iYogi's customers are experiencing have to do with Windows 7 installation, or the related application and data migration. These are fixable issues, but they don't paint a good first impression of the operating system. While Microsoft clearly still has work to do in the upgrade process department (though as noted in September 2009, it is faster than Vista's), this number is not as bad as it may first appear.

Most users who move to the next version of Windows do so by buying a new PC (about 95 percent). This means that the larger majority of users are already not affected by the biggest issue that is plaguing Windows 7; that's quite good news for Microsoft. Of course, the company needs to make sure these users don't get discouraged, and the company has help resources for that: via phone, e-mail, and as of October 2009, even on Twitter. Those who do have issues installing Microsoft's latest and greatest, however, are reporting that they prefer Windows 7 to Windows Vista, once they get past the upgrade kinks.

Twenty-six percent of users that have been experiencing trouble with Windows 7, the second biggest group, said that after the upgrade process was complete, they were confused about what had happened to programs like Windows Mail, Windows Movie Maker, and Windows Photo Gallery. Redmond announced in September 2008 that it had stripped these programs out of Windows 7 and further confirmed in October 2008 that users would have to download Windows Live Essentials (Windows Live versions of Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Writer, Toolbar, and Family Safety) if they wanted to use the successors to these applications on Windows 7. The successors are Windows Live versions that are more feature-rich and are updated separately from the operating system.

In November 2008, Microsoft told us that it would offer a download link to Windows Live Essentials within Windows 7 to encourage users to download the suite of applications. The link isn't particularly prominent, but it does come up ("Go online to get Windows Live Essentials") if you search on Windows 7 for any of the missing applications. Still, the extra step of having to download and install the applications was too much for some consumers.

Κι εγώ απαντώ: "Μπα; Ξαφνικά είναι ΠΑΛΙ και για ΠΟΛΛΟΣΤΗ φορά Η ΝΕΑ ΚΑΙ ΚΑΛΥΤΕΡΗ ΕΚΔΟΣΗ ΤΩΝ WINDOWS ΠΟΥ ΕΓΙΝΕ ΠΟΤΕ ίδια ή και χειρότερη από την προηγούμενη; Τι μας λέτε; Σοβαρά; Μα εσείς λέγατε εδώ και ενάμιση χρόνο (από τις πειρατικές ακόμη και ούτε καν beta εκδόσεις) ότι τα Windows 7 έπρεπε να βγούνε τότε γιατί ήτανε τέλεια φτιαγμένα". Α ΡΕ ΖΩΑ. Τι ζώα; ΖΩΑΡΕΣ!!!

iMac review από το ArsTechnica

If you liked the previous iMac, you'll like the new iMac—especially the 27" version. The single largest improvement is by far the screen, both in its size and its LED backlighting, which gives you tons of space for work and play on a crisp-looking display. And if you've dreamed up some scenario in which you need both an all-in-one computer and an external display for use with a notebook on the same desk, then this is practically your dream machine.

The downsides to the iMac are the same downsides that have almost always been there—while it's possible to perform some upgrades, it's an all-in-one with limitations. Still, the stock offerings are nice, and it's easy for most of us (who are not video professionals, for example) to get work done on this machine. If you still harbor hate for glossy displays, then you have likely already ditched most of Apple's offerings anyway. And if you wanted to use this thing as an external display for your gaming console, you're going to be disappointed (for the time being).

Pittsburgh-based tattoo artist Cliff Maynard has an unusual medium that he works with: used joint ends!

“I was studying mosaics in school,” recalled the artist, “I just remember sort of making this connection in my head between the tiles and roach papers.” (Maybe he was stoned? I’ve heard it increases creativity…)

Initially reluctant to display his creations—which can take over 200 hours each to create—for obvious reasons, Maynard has turned out elaborate and quite beautiful THC-infused portraits of Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, John Lennon and Snoop Dogg. He’s even rendered a resin-flecked homage to Michelangelo’s “Creation.” He takes commissions and charges a reasonable $2,000 for an 8-by-10 portrait and more for larger pieces. Not bad, I say, due to the costs of his, er, “materials”!

Google VS Mozilla;

Asa Dotzler, Mozilla's director of community development, used his personal blog to urge Firefox users away from Google and to use Microsoft's search engine Bing, instead. Dotzler cited privacy concerns, specifically pointing to comments recently made by Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

"I think judgment matters," said Schmidt. "If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place." Dotzler then links to the Bing add-on for Firefox, stating that Bing's privacy policy is better than Google's (and notably fails to mention Yahoo at all).

Mozilla Messaging announced on Tuesday the official release of Thunderbird 3, a major update of the popular open source mail client. The new version brings great improvements, including an impressive new search system and support for tabs in the user interface.

The Mozilla Foundation began forming the Mozilla Messaging subsidiary in 2007 with the aim of giving Thunderbird a chance to soar. The company brought in former ActiveState CTO David Ascher to direct the organization and set its technical agenda. After he took the reigns in early 2008, he began documenting his team's vision for Thunderbird 3, an ambitious update that would modernize the mail client in much the same way that the Firefox 3 release renewed Mozilla's browser. The roadmap included plans to adopt Gecko 1.9 so that Thunderbird could leverage important improvements that had been made to the underlying architecture of the Mozilla platform.

Microsoft has cleared the air on a poorly translated quote by confirming that people have always been able to, and are still allowed to, use Apple products at their events. The source of the misinformation was supposedly a representative at a Windows Mobile 6.5 demonstration in Munich, Germany and the statements resulted in stories saying Microsoft does not allow the mention or use of Apple products at its events. "While we've been unable to confirm the specific exchange, it would not reflect our overall company policy and business practices," a Microsoft spokesperson told Ars. "Reporters and analysts are free to use whatever technology they wish in covering any Microsoft event, and always have been."

Vevo, the spinoff of YouTube meant for professional music videos, has finally launched—with the usual sputter that comes with highly-anticipated website debuts. The site, which has been in the works since at least March of this year, is aimed at allowing the major record labels to put their stuff online on their own sanitized part of YouTube, outside the user-generated YouTube ghetto. Through this combined effort, all parties involved hope to make posting videos on the Web more profitable than it has been thus far.

Bottom Line: A titanic entertainment -- movie magic is back!
A dozen years later, James Cameron has proven his point: He is king of the world.

As commander-in-chief of an army of visual-effects technicians, creature designers, motion-capture mavens, stunt performers, dancers, actors and music and sound magicians, he brings science-fiction movies into the 21st century with the jaw-dropping wonder that is "Avatar." And he did it almost from scratch.

There is no underlying novel or myth to generate his story. He certainly draws deeply on Westerns, going back to "The Vanishing American" and, in particular, "Dances With Wolves." And the American tragedy in Vietnam informs much of his story. But then all great stories build on the past ( "Avatar" premiered Thursday in London).

After writing this story many years ago, he discovered that the technology he needed to make it happen did not exist. So, he went out and created it in collaboration with the best effects minds in the business. This is motion capture brought to a new high where every detail of the actors' performances gets preserved in the final CG character as they appear on the screen. Yes, those eyes are no longer dead holes but big and expressive, almost dominating the wide and long alien faces.

The movie is 161 minutes and flies by in a rush. Repeat business? You bet. "Titanic"-level business? That level may never be reached again, but Fox will see more than enough grosses worldwide to cover its bet on Cameron.

Το Micro$oftNBC σφάζει την Apple με το βαμβάκι

Apple is without a doubt the consummate innovator of the new media era, turning the music business and then the mobile phone business upside down, and now setting its sights squarely on the TV, publishing, and video game businesses. (Oh, and it has a nice computer business going, too.)

And yet Apple does none of the things that pundits always say you should do to succeed in the Internet economy.

Apple doesn’t blog; it doesn’t Tweet; it does little on Facebook; it doesn’t engage with its customer base. It doesn’t ask the “community” for feedback or rapidly iterate based on any such feedback or even respond to criticism.

It doesn’t give anything away for free, thank you very much — in fact, the company charges premium prices for just about everything. Its customer service is perfunctory. It engages in terribly consumer-unfriendly practices like making you buy a whole new device when the battery dies.

And marketing? I don’t know the numbers, but it’s hard to think of any technology-related business that spends more money on that most retro of media, the glossy magazine ad. It pours tens of millions into television advertising, and buys up the most expensive billboards in big cities. Sure, Apple buys online ads too, but mostly display ads. For the most part, Apple advertising is old media all the way.

This anomaly could be written off as simply the Apple exception: So much about the company is unlikely in the extreme that it may not be a good example of anything.

According to a well respected security firm, Microsoft’s flagship Windows 7 operating system is less secure in its default configuration that Vista.

Trend Micros CEO Raimund Genes believes that Microsoft has put usability ahead of security:

“I’m not saying Windows 7 is insecure, but out of the box Vista is better.”

“I was disappointed when I first used a Windows 7 machine that there was no warning that I had no anti-virus, unlike Vista. There are no file extension hidden warnings either. Even when you do install anti-virus, warnings that it has not been updated are almost invisible.”

“Windows 7 may be an improvement in terms of usability but in terms of security it’s a mistake, though one that isn’t that surprising. When Microsoft’s developers choose between usability and security, they will always choose usability.”

Microsoft started out its life as a consumer/developer-focused company. The company subsequently switched strategies and became a largely enterprise-focused vendor. These days, consumer is king for Microsoft — at least as far as corporate strategy and where its ad dollars go.

But what if Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie and other leaders at Microsoft are wrong and integrating the consumer and business worlds doesn’t really matter? One very influential market watcher, Mark Anderson, author of the Strategic News Service newsletter, is betting that instead of a melding, there will be an increasing chasm between the consumer and business market.

Anderson, whose word carries a lot of weight with corporate execs (including those from Microsoft), venture capitalists and other movers and shakers, held his annual predictions dinner in New York City on December 10. His list of 2010 tech predictions, which included a number of things that won’t surprise some tech watchers, Anderson acknowledged, were pretty dire for Microsoft.

Μαθήματα της Seagate

Στο πως να κρατήσετε τον κόσμο της τεχνολογίας δεκαετίες πίσω.

Mechanical hard drives still hold the advantage when it comes to capacity and price-per-gigabyte, but there's no touching the speed of a quality solid state drive (SSD). OEMs know this, and while mobile PC users might not be willing to pay the premium placed on SSDs, they may be willing to step up to a 7200 RPM hard drive. In fact, Seagate reckons that by 2011, half of all mobile hard drives will spin at 7200 RPM in order to better compete with their pricier brethren.

By 2012, Seagate predicts most mobile PCs -- even netbooks -- will have transitioned to 7200 RPM hard drives. That's good news for power users more concerned with performance than they are with maximing battery life. The theoretical performance difference between a 5400 RPM and 7200 RPM hard drive sits at about 33 percent, but it can be even more, depending on cache, areal density, and other factors.

A full five months after having first announced the deal, Microsoft and Yahoo have now agreed to terms on a landmark 10-year search commitment that will have Microsoft's Bing powering Yahoo's search engine, the two tech giants said.

"Microsoft and Yahoo believe that this deal will create a sustainable and more compelling alternative in search that can provide consumers, advertisers, and publishers real choice, better value, and more innovation," the two companies said today in a joint statement. "Yahoo and Microsoft welcome the broad support the deal has received from key players in the advertising industry and remain hopeful that the closing of the transaction can occur in early 2010."

IAN LYNCH SMITH, a shaggy-haired ball of energy in his late 30s, beams as he ticks off some of the games that Freeverse, his little Brooklyn software company, has landed on the iPhone App Store’s coveted (and ever-changing) list of best-selling downloads: Moto Chaser, Flick Fishing, Flick Bowling and Skee-ball.

Skee-ball, Mr. Smith says, took about two months to develop and deploy and then raked in $181,000 for Freeverse in one month. The company’s latest bid for App Store fame? A game featuring a Jane Austen character in a lacy dress who karate-chops her way through hordes of advancing zombies.

“There’s never been anything like this experience for mobile software,” Mr. Smith says of the App Store boom. “This is the future of digital distribution for everything: software, games, entertainment, all kinds of content.”

As the App Store evolves from a kitschy catalog of novelty applications into what analysts and aficionados describe as a platform that is rapidly transforming mobile computing and telephony, it is changing the goals and testing the patience of developers, bolstering sales of the Apple motherships the applications ride upon — the iPhone and iPod Touch — and causing Apple’s competitors to overhaul their product lines and business models. It even threatens to open chinks in Apple’s own corporate armor.

Thanks in large part to the iPhone, introduced in 2007, and the App Store, which opened its doors last year, smartphones have become the Swiss Army knives of the digital age.

Nokia Booklet 3G

There's a lot to like about the Booklet: we were really excited about its beautiful design, high-resolution screen and embedded 3G connectivity -- until we started waiting around for it to load Windows 7 Starter, wondering if it was really worth $599 unsubsidized or $299 on a 2-year AT&T contract. We just can't forgive the slower processor and hard drive when there are significantly cheaper options out there that offer better performance -- and don't look so bad either. Straight up, the $399 Toshiba Mini NB205 is $200 less and performs better with a similarly long battery life, while Verizon offers the HP Mini 311 with a faster processor, NVIDIA Ion and hard drive for $199 on contract.

If you ask us, it all comes back to the MikroMikko and Nokia's recent inexperience in the laptop market. Sure, it's one of the world's leading mobile phone manufacturers (though Michael Gartenberg argues it needs to change drastically to survive as innovators), but when it comes to laptops and netbooks it's important to know the basics and get performance right before attaching a premium price to a product. The Booklet 3G is a great-looking netbook with stellar endurance, but its price and performance simply don't match up.

When many people think of gaming, they automatically think of gaming consoles. And, sure, many households have at least one (if not all) of the three major gaming consoles available: the Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii. But for a truly connected and immersive gaming experiences desktop PCs reign supreme. Gaming PCs are more upgradable than laptops, and it's still easier to install expansion packages to PC games than on consoles. The new 120Hz monitors have heralded in a new chapter to 3D gaming, and you simply can't get all the new gaming bells and whistles unless you have a high-powered gaming PC. That said, you don't necessarily have to buy the most expensive desktop to play the most popular games.

Τα περισσότερα από τα PC που προτείνουν δεν παίζουν καν Blu-Ray! Χμμμμ. Τρομερές ευκαιρίες αυτά τα PC για Windows παιχνίδια. Θα πάρω 5-6.

Acer VS Dell 2ος γύρος

Acer has officially leapfrogged Dell to become the world's second-largest PC builder, iSuppli confirmed in a new study. The Taiwan firm's computer shipments jumped 16.6 percent year-over-year in the summer to nearly 10.74 million PCs, or a 13.4 percent share of the entire market. Meanwhile, Dell actually dropped 5.9 percent to ship 10.34 million PCs, or 12.9 percent of the whole group.
Mainland China's Lenovo was the only other company in the top five to see similar growth and actually jumped by a higher 17.2 percent, but its much lower 6.94 million PCs kept it in fourth place. First-place HP and fifth-place Toshiba were in positive territory but grew much more modestly, climbing by respective 7 percent and 9.7 percent amounts to ship 15.9 million and 4.02 million computers each.

In qualifying the results, analysts credit the company's fast rise in notebooks, where budget full-size portables as well as its mastery of netbooks gave it the edge. Dell, HP and Toshiba have relatively small footprints in netbooks and skew their lines towards slightly higher prices.

In response to complaints from browser makers, Microsoft has revised its antitrust-settlement with European Union regulators so that Windows users will see a browser ballot screen that randomly lists the icons of the top five browsers upon every launch. The previous method had them listed in alphabetical order, putting Apple's Safari first. Complaints from Opera, Google, and Mozilla resulted in the change, and also pushed Microsoft into moving the ballot screen from Internet Explorer into a standard webpage format, according to Bloomberg, which cites two unnamed people familiar with the case. The browser ballot screen will let European PC users download a third-party browser without having to use Internet Explorer.

The modifications should allow the EU to complete the agreement as soon as December 15. Assuming this date holds, the very long antitrust trial will soon finally come to a close.

In December 2007, Opera filed a complaint with the European Union, accusing Microsoft of violating EU antitrust law by bundling IE with Windows. Τα σπάει η Apple γι άλλη μια φορά!

Apple products have topped the list of the most popular computers sold in U.S retail in October, an analyst for market research firm NPD Group told CNET on Friday.

The recently introduced 21-inch iMac was the top-selling desktop for the month, Stephen Baker, NPD's vice president of industry analysis, said in an interview. Apple's high-end iMac 27-inch model took the No. 3 spot in the desktop category, he said.

"Apple gets a bounce whenever they come out with new computers," Baker said. "For the most part, October was a down month on the Windows side because [PC manufacturers] were working through inventory before the Windows 7 launch."

The company also took the top spot in the notebook category in October, with the $1,199 MacBook Pro, Baker said. Overall, Apple took 4 out of the top 10 positions for notebooks in U.S. retail for the month, according to Baker. In addition to the top-seeded MacBook Pro, Apple also secured the 8, 9, and 10 positions.

The art of verbal self-defense can be tricky. Ramble on while defending yourself against critics, and you can expose yourself to new criticisms. For a recent and clear case study in this misstep, look no further than Google’s own Eric Schmidt. In a Wall Street Journal opinion piece titled “How Google Can Help Newspapers,” Schmidt set out to argue what has been said a million times before, and what everyone but news executives in denial will admit: The Internet isn’t killing news, it’s forcing it through a painful evolution into a new business model.

The op-ed came a few days after Rupert Murdoch made a gutsy bluff to block Google from indexing stories on News Corp.’s sites. Murdoch is no dummy, and all his huffing and posturing is aimed less at preserving a dead business model than at testing his leverage in a new one –- the way a mischievous kid tests a new babysitter to see what he can get away with. And it was cunning of Schmidt to push Murdoch back on his own playground. But in the course of stating the obvious –- Google isn’t killing newspapers –- Schmidt made a few spurious arguments of his own.

He begins with a fantasy of reading a “news gadget” that “knows who I am, what I like, and what I have already read.” We all have our fantasies, but this one strikes me as a bit dystopian and suggests a fundamental ignorance of what news actually is. Much of the news I read these days I don’t like. But I need to read it, and print newspapers are very good at putting it in front of my eyes.
