I am a big-time David Lynch nut. I remember having to steal a copy of Blue Velvet and watch it at a friend’s house because my parents thought it was too sketchy for me to see at 12. I watched each episode of Twin Peaks the night that it originally aired. I saw Wild at Heart and Fire Walk With Me on their opening days. For my money, this guy has made some of the most original, thrilling, deep, and beautiful cinema ever, ever, ever.

So just because you care, here are my favorite David Lynch things in descending order from the best on down to the simply very great:

A number of modern Web features cannot be used pervasively on the Internet because Microsoft's dominant browser, Internet Explorer, often fails to support current and emerging standards. Google has a plan to drag IE into the world of modern browsing by building a plugin that will allow it to use Chrome's HTML renderer and high-performance JavaScript engine.

Microsoft has recently taken promising steps forward by engaging with the standards community and adding much-needed features in Internet Explorer 8. Although this demonstrates a willingness to improve, it doesn't change the fact that Microsoft is still lagging far behind other browser vendors. Perhaps more troubling than the deficiencies of IE8 is the tragic longevity of IE6, which was released in 2001 and is long overdue for retirement. Some companies unfortunately cannot give it up, either, because they depend on proprietary Web software that only supports legacy versions of IE.

Google hopes that delivering Chrome's rendering engine in an IE plugin will provide a pragmatic compromise for users who can't upgrade. Web developers will be able to use an X-UA-Compatible meta tag to specify that their page should be displayed with the Chrome renderer plugin instead of using Internet Explorer's Trident engine. This approach will ensure that the Chrome engine is only used when it is supposed to and that it won't disrupt the browser's handling of legacy Web applications that require IE6 compatibility.

Installing a plugin is arguably less disruptive to users than migrating them to a different browser. It is unclear, however, if IT departments that refuse to upgrade their users to a better browser are going to be comfortable deploying new plugins. I discussed this issue with Google software engineer Alex Russel and group product manager Mike Smith who cited the ubiquity of Flash as an example of how the plugin strategy could have the potential to move the Web forward.

The world suffers global recession, enormous inequity, hunger, deforestation, pollution, climate change, nuclear weapons, terrorism, etc. To those who say we’re not really making progress, many might point to the fact that at least we’ve eliminated slavery.

But sadly that is not the truth.

One hundred forty-three years after passage of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and 60 years after Article 4 of the U.N.'s Universal Declaration of Human Rights banned slavery and the slave trade worldwide, there are more slaves than at any time in human history -- 27 million.

Today’s slavery focuses on big profits and cheap lives. It is not about owning people like before, but about using them as completely disposable tools for making money.

During the four years that Benjamin Skinner researched modern-day slavery, he posed as a buyer at illegal brothels on several continents, interviewed convicted human traffickers in a Romanian prison and endured giardia, malaria, dengue and a bad motorcycle accident.

But Skinner is most haunted by his experience in a brothel in Bucharest, Romania, where he was offered a young woman with Down syndrome in exchange for a used car.

The newcomer is AMD’s spiffy new Radeon HD 5870. With an 850MHz engine clock and 1,200MHz GDDR5 clock, AMD’s new progeny looks like it has the chops to take on Nvidia. But we’ve been disappointed by promising GPUs from AMD’s graphics division in the past.

Not this time.

We tested three cards (also tossing in AMD’s previous best, the Radeon HD 4890) in a Core i7 975 system with 6GB of RAM, running on an Asus Rampage II X58 motherboard. All that CPU horsepower is to ensure that the benchmarks stress the graphics card, rather than be held back by CPU or RAM. We used Windows 7 Ultimate RTM as the OS.

After the smoke cleared, the 285 GTX looked like a tired fighter who’d been rope-a-doped and KO’d. The performance differences aren’t minor, they’re huge: The Radeon HD 5870 was 63 percent faster in Crysis, 32 percent faster in Far Cry 2, 33 percent faster in STALKER, and even 24 percent faster in Battleforge, an RTS that’s arguably more dependent on CPU than graphics.

This round of the endless GPU wars, then, is clearly owned by AMD, at least for single-GPU cards. And with performance like this, who wants the heat and power consumption of a dual-GPU card.

On the other hand, we won’t count Nvidia out. While Nvidia’s current high end is now relegated to the status of also-rans, the company is slaving away on its DirectX 11 GPU, code-named GT300. When that ships, expect a rematch.

Apple's WebKit HTML rendering engine has gained experimental support for WebGL, an emerging standard that aims to bring native 3D graphics to the Web. The WebGL implementation has landed in the WebKit source tree, but the feature is not yet enabled by default in nightly builds, indicating that it is still at a very early stage of development.

The WebGL standard is being devised by a coalition of browser vendors and other interested parties in collaboration with the Khronos Group, an industry consortium that oversees OpenGL and a number of other standards relating to graphics and media. The goal of WebGL is to expose the low-level OpenGL ES 2.0 APIs through JavaScript so that they can be used to draw hardware-accelerated 3D graphics in the HTML Canvas element.

Street Fighter is a popular video fighting game started on the year 1987 and until now. As years goes by, the characters of this video game like Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Bison and others became more well known to people. In fact it was already introduced on cartoon series and even movie films. No wonder some artists are inspired to create different concept of Street Fighter arts these days.

HP's ENVY 15 isn't much of a "thin and light," really, more of a straight up premium 15-incher crammed into a 1-inch thick 5.18 pound form factor. It keeps the ENVY 13's unibody-style construction, and, sadly, the single button glass trackpad, but also works in a new Core i7 processor, makes room for dual SSD drives and adds high-end Radeon HD 4830 graphics with 1GB of VRAM. The 15.6-inch LCD isn't quite as stellar as the 13, at 300 nits, but HP did manage to include support for a Slim Fit battery for the ENVY 15 -- though with non-switchable discreet graphics, you're not going to get much longevity out of this laptop either way. The two laptops start at $1,699 and $1,799, respectively (a far cry from the original ENVY 133's $2,100 starting price), and will be available on October 18th with Windows 7 pre-loaded.

360.000 IBM workers have been told to stop using Microsoft Office and switch to the Open Office-based software Symphony.
Quoting an inside source, the German economic newspaper, “Handelsblatt” reports that staff at IBM have been given ten days to change to Symphony, IBM's in-house Lotus software. The use of Microsoft Office will in future require managerial approval. With immediate affect, the Open Document Format (ODF) will rule at IBM with the file ending .doc soon belonging to the past.

Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin has a message for Microsoft: he wants the software giant to stop attacking Linux. Zemlin contends that Microsoft is engaged in a covert war against the open source operating system and that the company's hostile behavior is detrimental to the growing number of Microsoft customers who deploy mixed Windows and Linux environments.

By all accounts, Microsoft's private company meeting at Seattle's Safeco Field today was a hit -- with a preview of a "Bing 2.0" overhaul, executives demonstrating Project Natal, the unveiling of the first Windows 7 television commercial, comedy from Saturday Night Live's Seth Meyers, high-fives from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, free beer and plenty of Microsoft kool-aid to go around.

And then there was that poor Microsoft employee who tried to take a picture of Ballmer with an iPhone.

Apparently, it was all in good fun, but suffice it to say that the person probably won't make that mistake again. Microsoft employees alluded to the incident on Twitter, and I was able to confirm details independently.

Το θάψιμο της χρονιάς από τη μαμά Micro$oft

Δικαίωμα της Micro$oft είναι να λέει ότι ανοησία θέλει για τα παλιό-Windows της αλλά έλεος. Όχι άλλο κάρβουνο.

Σε “εκπαιδευτικό” υλικό που προωθεί σε μεγαλοκαταστήματα στην Αμερική, θάβει τα Apple προϊόντα. Βέβαια το μεγάλο θάψιμο πέφτει στο Linux.

Μπορώ να δώσω τουλάχιστον δύο απαντήσεις για κάθε ανοησία που λένε για τα Apple προϊόντα αλλά ειδικά για το Linux η βλακεία τους σπάει ρεκόρ. Μάλλον ο Steve Ballmer έγραψε το “εκπαιδευτικό” υλικό. Δεν εξηγείται αλλιώς. Τέτοια βλακεία; Steve Ballmer, ω ναι!

Αλλά έτσι είναι. Αν είσαι σε κατάσταση πανικού, τέτοια κάνεις. Καημένη Micro$oft. Δεν σε παίζει κανείς. Κάντε κάποιος μια αγκαλίτσα στον καημένο τον Steve Ballmer. Το παιδοβούβαλο έχει ανάγκη όχι μόνο από τα χρήματά σας αλλά και από αγκαλίτσες.

Μη στενοχωριέσαι Steve. Μπορείς όποτε θέλεις να περάσεις από τον καναπέ μου να χαλαρώσεις και να μου πεις ότι θέλεις. Θα ξαλαφρώσεις πολύ. Βλήμα, ε βλήμα.

Snow Leopard booted into the 32-bit kernel is always faster than Leopard, with fair to substantial gains, depending on the application.

But Snow Leopard booted into the 64-bit kernel shows a consistent performance advantage over Leopard, and even more advantage over 32-bit Snow Leopard as well. Performance gains of up to 30% were observed, making Snow Leopard by far the best value for the money in a long, long time. At about $25 , you won’t find a more compelling upgrade of any kind, anywhere.

Snow Leopard: Το review του Ars Technica

In June of 2004, during the WWDC keynote address, Steve Jobs revealed Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger to developers and the public for the first time. When the finished product arrived in April of 2005, Tiger was the biggest, most important, most feature-packed release in the history of Mac OS X by a wide margin. Apple's marketing campaign reflected this, touting "over 150 new features."

All those new features took time. Since its introduction in 2001, there had been at least one major release of Mac OS X each year. Tiger took over a year and a half to arrive. At the time, it definitely seemed worth the wait. Tiger was a hit with users and developers. Apple took the lesson to heart and quickly set expectations for the next major release of Mac OS X, Leopard. Through various channels, Apple communicated its intention to move from a 12-month to an 18-month release cycle for Mac OS X. Leopard was officially scheduled for "spring 2007."

As the date approached, Apple's marketing machine trod a predictable path.

Apple even went so far as to list all 300 new features on its website. As it turns out, "spring" was a bit optimistic. Leopard actually shipped at the end of October 2007, nearly two and a half years after Tiger. Did Leopard really have twice as many new features as Tiger? That's debatable. What's certain is that Leopard included a solid crop of new features and technologies, many of which we now take for granted. (For example, have you had a discussion with a potential Mac user since the release of Leopard without mentioning Time Machine? I certainly haven't.)

Mac OS X appeared to be maturing. The progression was clear: longer release cycles, more features. What would Mac OS X 10.6 be like? Would it arrive three and a half years after Leopard? Would it and include 500 new features? A thousand?

At WWDC 2008, Bertrand Serlet announced a move that he described as "unprecedented" in the PC industry.

That's right, the next major release of Mac OS X would have no new features. The product name reflected this: "Snow Leopard." Mac OS X 10.6 would merely be a variant of Leopard. Better, faster, more refined, more... uh... snowy.
