SAN FRANCISCO — For iPhone owners, it always comes back to the antenna.

Apple’s touch-screen smartphone has been a sensation since Day 1 three years ago, and many who own the device believe it to be almost perfect — if only it worked better as a phone.

So it is not surprising that as the first boxes of the new iPhone 4 landed in the hands of the earliest adopters late Wednesday, the antenna’s reception quickly became an Internet obsession. What surprised many of them: the precious little bars that signal network connections inexplicably disappeared when they cradled the phone in their hands a particular way. Sometimes, but not always, the cradling resulted in dropped calls.

In the hours before Apple weighed in on the problem, iPhone fans turned to one another on the Internet in a zealous exercise in crowd-sourcing for answers to the mystery.

We know what you're thinking, and we're thinking it too: this sounds crazy. Essentially, Apple is saying that the problem is how you hold your phone, and that the solution is to change that habit, or buy one of their cases. Admittedly, this isn't a problem that exists only for the iPhone 4 -- we've seen reports of the same behavior on previous generations (the 3G and 3GS), and there is a running thread about this problem with the Nexus One. While it is definitely true that interference is an unavoidable problem, we can't help feeling like this is really a bit of bad design. If the only answer is to move your hand, why didn't Apple just move the antenna position? What we can say without question is that in our testing of the phone, we had improved reception and fewer dropped calls than we experienced with the last generation, and we never noticed this issue. Additionally, when using a bumper we can't recreate the signal loss. So, now we have an answer... all we're wondering is whether or not the company will start handing out bumpers pro-bono to those who are experiencing problems. It certainly seems like the right thing to do.

Το μυαλό σας έχει προβλήματα. ΟΛΟΙ λένε ότι με το iPhone 4 έχουν τηλεφωνήματα σε περιοχές που δεν είχαν με το 3GS. ΟΛΟΙ λένε ότι τα τηλεφωνήματα τους διαρκούν κανονικά σε αντίθεση με το 3GS.

Αλλά όχι! Εσείς εκεί το βιολί σας. Δεν έχει σήμα καμπάνα γιατί λέει το πιάνεις έτσι κι αλλιώς και χάνετε το σήμα κι αυτό κι εκείνο.

Να σας πω και μερικές άλλες ανοησίες που έχει το iPhone 4: Αν το πετάξετε μέσα στα νερά, θα βραχυκυκλώσει. Αν το πετάξετε στα σκουπίδια δεν θα έχετε iPhone 4. Αν το πατήσετε με το αυτοκίνητο ή άλλο μέσο μεταφορών, θα γίνει κομμάτια. Αν το έχετε κλειστό δεν θα μπορείτε να κάνετε τίποτα μαζί του. Αν το έχετε ανοιχτό και σας καλούν, θα χτυπάει και θα δονείται.

Α! Και το πιο σημαντικό απ' όλα! Αν δεν αγοράσετε iPhone 4 δεν θα έχετε iPhone 4!!!

Απίστευτο πράγμα. Πως τόλμησε να σας τα κάνει αυτά η Apple (και ακόμη περισσότερα)!

Ψιτ! Και που είστε; Αν αγοράζετε κάτι που κάνει μερικές εκατοντάδες ευρώ, αγοράστε και μια, δυο θήκες. Ξέρετε βρε. Αυτές που είναι για προστασία από ατυχήματα; Ή αυτές που σας προστατεύουν από τη μ@λ@κ!@ που σας δέρνει.
