Over the past few months I’ve been getting increasing amounts of feedback from people who have expressed an interest in Linux, taken the operating system for a test drive, but who then decided that it’s not for them. Here I’m going to share with you some of that feedback.
How times have changed. Wind the clock back a few years and people who were willing to take a Linux distro for a spin were few and far between. Nowadays, partly down to how easy it is to try a Linux distro (download the ISO file, burn a disc and boot up off of it) and partly thanks to the recession, people do seem to be taking the time to try out this operating system.
As someone who writes a fair bit about Linux, I get a lot of feedback from users. I also seem to get more than my fair share of people venting their frustrations at me, partly in hope that I’ll help them, and partly because they just feel they want to vent at someone.
So, what I’ve done here is gone through the Linux-related emails I’ve received over the past few months and distilled the feedback down into the most common reasons why people end up feeling that Linux sucks.
1. No gaming support
This is the number one complaint.
Here people are usually talking about their existing library of Windows games, but a related complaint is that new games don’t support the OS.
2. Little/no OEM support
Second most popular reason why people think Linux ’sucks.’
How many Windows users are there who would have trouble setting up their PC if it arrived at their home totally blank? A lot. Being able to buy a computer that’s pre set up with Windows (or Mac) is a massively strong selling point that simply shouldn’t be overlooked. The hurdle of having to set up Linux on a system is too much for many to handle.
3. No iPod support
This is changing, but for now, it’s a big sticking point.
4. No migration tool
For most people, there’s nothing scarier than starting from a blank slate.
5. Driver/hardware confusion
Upgrading to a free OS like Linux is great, but if you have to buy new hardware, or run into problems getting your existing hardware to work, it’s better to stick with what you know.
Also, the fact that there’s no such thing as a “works with Linux” logo for new hardware means that people who might like to upgrade feel totally in the dark as to what future hardware they could buy.
6. Free tech support dries up
There are a lot of people out there who are only able to keep their PCs running thanks to the kindness (and tech know-how) of others. Switching from an OS that has +90% dominance to one that has a 1% usage share means that much of those support avenues dry up.
Note: This used to be an issue for people wanting to switch to Mac too.
7. Confusion about distro differences
What makes one distro different to another? Since price isn’t there to help people decide (as it is with different editions of Windows), it’s difficult for people to understand the why there are so many distros, and what the differences between them actually are.
The good news is that people are increasingly aware and interested in Linux. The bad news is that there are still a number of big obstacles preventing people from being able to switch to the OS.
Side note: 8. Recently I’ve started pointing people to Linux Mint rather than Ubuntu, and I’m getting the overwhelming impression that newbies are happier with this distro than they are with Ubuntu. Desipte this switch though, most of the issues that people have raised apply across the board, no matter what the distro.

Με μια γρήγορη ματιά όλα τα παραπάνω και ακόμη περισσότερα μπορούν να ισχύουν χωρίς καμία αμφισβήτηση. ΑΛΛΑ...
1. Γιατί τα Windows έχουν παιχνίδια; Θα μας τρελάνετε; Καθυστερημένοι είστε 1000%. Παιχνίδια=Παιχνιδομηχανές=Nintendo Wii, PS3, XBOX 360, κλπ. Στο κάτω-κάτω αν είσαι ΤΟΣΟ εξαρτώμενος από τα Windows παιχνίδια βάλε WINE ή άλλες λύσεις που δεν είναι του παρόντος και χέσε μας.
2. Υπάρχουν εταιρίες και άνθρωποι εκεί έξω που μπορούν να σου στήσουν Linux μια χαρά. Στο κάτω-κάτω ΑΠΑΙΤΗΣΤΕ από τους "ειδικούς" τύπου Multirama (roflmao) και όχι μόνο, να μπορούν να σας παρέχουν ΚΑΙ Linux συστήματα όπως και την υποστήριξή τους. ΖΩΑ.
3. Επίσης, υπάρχουν λύσεις αλλά και πάλι ΑΠΑΙΤΗΣΤΕ από την Apple και όχι μόνο να βγάλει iTunes, κλπ. για Linux. ΖΩΑ.
4. Φαντάζομαι τον τρόμο του να σύρεις με το ποντίκι τα αρχεία σου σ' έναν άλλο σκληρό δίσκο και να τ' αφήσεις (drag and drop). Και μετά να επαναλάβεις την κίνηση αυτή στο νέο Linux σύστημά σου. Στην χειρότερη ΑΠΑΙΤΗΣΤΕ από τους "ειδικούς" να το κάνουν αυτοί για λογαριασμό σας.
5. Η μεγαλύτερη ίσως παπαριά στη λίστα αυτήν. Είναι γνωστό και στις πέτρες ότι το Linux γενικά είναι ΠΟΛΥ ανώτερο στην υποστήριξη υλικού από τα ΙΔΙΑ τα Windows. Στη χειρότερη ΑΠΑΙΤΗΣΤΕ από τις εταιρίες να παρέχουν υποστήριξη για το Linux.
6. Τι να πω; Πραγματικά αστείο. Την υποστήριξη που έχει το Linux ΘΑ ΘΕΛΑΝ να την είχαν τα Windows και τα Mac. Ρωτάς κάτι και ΑΜΕΣΑ παίρνεις απάντηση. Μπορεί η απάντηση να ΜΗΝ είναι αυτή που θέλεις αλλά αυτό είναι δικό σου πρόβλημα. Στο κάτω-κάτω ΑΠΑΙΤΗΣΤΕ από τους "ειδικούς" την υποστήριξη που σας ταιριάζει.
7. Λογικός προβληματισμός; ΟΧΙ βέβαια εκτός αν είστε ζώα. Το 99% εκεί έξω, ΑΚΟΜΗ και των ειδικών, ΔΕΝ ξέρει να σας πει χωρίς να κοιτάζει κάποιο φυλλάδιο ή κάποια οθόνη τις διαφορές των Windows 7 Starter με των Windows 7 Ultimate. Αυτές τις μαλακίες να τις πείτε σε κάποιον που δεν σας ξέρει. Στη χειρότερη; ΑΠΑΙΤΗΣΤΕ να σας υποδείξουν πιο Linux σας ταιριάζει.
8. Mint=Ubuntu με ευκολίες για τους Windows χρήστες. Γνώμη μου και εδώ είναι κάτι που δεν γουστάρω ούτε την Apple και ούτε την κοινότητα του Linux, είναι ότι θα πρέπει να σκέφτονται ΑΚΟΜΗ πιο απλά για τους νέους χρήστες και ΟΧΙ να προσπαθούν να κάνουν ότι κάνουν η Apple και η Micro$oft, καλώς ή κακώς. Εξάλλου τα Windows και τα Mac OS έχουν ΤΟΣΑ πολλά μπαγκάζια του παρελθόντος που τελικά τα κάνουν πιο δύσκολα για την μάζα εκεί έξω. Αναφέρω παράδειγμα το δεξί κλικ. Ξέρω ότι το λατρεύετε ΟΛΟΙ σας εκεί έξω. Εμένα πάλι είναι ο εφιάλτης μου. Ευτυχώς αποδείχτηκε με τα multitouch συστήματα που κυκλοφορούν και πρόκειται να κυκλοφορήσουν το ΠΟΣΟ δίκιο είχα για το ΑΧΡΗΣΤΟ δεξί κλικ. Ποτέ δεν χρειάστηκε και ΠΟΤΕ δεν έπρεπε να το χρειαστούμε. Αυτό που χρειαζόμασταν και χρειαζόμαστε είναι ο ΟΡΘΟΣ τρόπος επίλυσης προβλημάτων. Ο Αλγόριθμος. Δεν θα πρεπε να το εξηγώ αυτό στους Έλληνες. Στους απόγονους του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου (ότι δεν λύνεται...) και του Οδυσσέα (δούρειος ίππος...). Το δεξί κλικ είναι ΕΝΑΣ από τους άπειρους Γόρδιους Δεσμούς και Τροίες εκεί έξω στα σαβουρομηχανήματά μας και στις ζωές μας που ΕΜΕΙΣ επιτρέψαμε να υπάρχουν.
Ελπίζω το iPad και ΟΛΑ τα εργαλεία που θα το "αντιγράψουν" να νικήσουν την επί δεκαετίες σαχλαμάρα του δεξί κλικ (και όχι μόνο) ΜΙΑ ΚΑΙ ΓΙΑ ΠΑΝΤΑ.
ΞΥΠΝΗΣΤΕ ΡΕ ΖΩΑ.
Το πρόβλημα ΔΕΝ είναι οι άλλοι. Το πρόβλημα είναι ΕΣΕΙΣ!!!
