Τα σπάει το Avatar λέμε!

"Avatar" continues to outperform expectations.

Just days ago, execs suggested the Fox-distributed pic was a lock to reach No. 2 on the all-time list of worldwide boxoffice hits by next week.

Incredibly, the forecast proved too conservative.

On Wednesday, "Avatar" passed the $1.12 billion tally by 2003's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" to become the second-highest worldwide grosser ever. James Cameron's sci-fi epic headed into Thursday with a domestic cume of $374.4 million and a foreign cume of $760.8 million, for wordwide boxoffice totaling $1.14 billion and counting.

Cameron's "Titanic" is the all-time top worldwide grosser, ringing up $1.84 billion in 1997-1998.

"Avatar" -- which has overachieved most dramatically overseas since unspooling mid-December -- now also is poised to hit the top 10 list of all-time top domestic grossers.

On Thursday, the pic will pass No. 10 domestic grosser "Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith," which rung up $380.3 in 2005. But by the end of the coming weekend, "Avatar" should climb significantly higher in the ranks of all-time domestic hits.

Windows 7=Τρελές πωλήσεις;

Microsoft has declared a massive victory for its latest operating system: "Windows 7 is by far the fastest selling Operating System in history," according to Craig Beilinson, the Director of Marketing for Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division. Unfortunately, Beilinson did not share the exact unit sales number. But has evidence to back his claims: The week of the Windows 7 launch saw PC sales jump almost 50% over the week before; PC sales on Black Friday were up 63% over last year's Black Friday; and for the entire holiday 2009, there was more than 50% increase in PC sales year over year.

Τι μπουρδολογία Θέε μου! Τα ίδια έκανε και στην CES 2010 ο βλάκας ο Steve Ballmer. Αφού είναι τόσο τρομερές οι πωλήσεις. Και αφού τα σπάνε τα Windows PC με τα Windows 7, γιατί δε δίνουν αριθμούς; Γιατί πολύ απλά ΔΕΝ συμβαίνει κάτι τέτοιο. Θυμάται άραγε κανένα ζώο που λέγανε τα ίδια και χειρότερα για τα Vista μόλις 1-2 χρόνια πριν; Όλοι ξέρουμε την τρομερή επιτυχία με τα Vista, έτσι;

Το τρίτο το μακρύτερο;

Τι χρησιμοποίησε το Gizmodo στη CES 2010

New gadgets are the stars of CES, but there was a ton of gear behind the scenes that was instrumental to our coverage of the event. Here's what kept us alive in Vegas.

Let's get this out of the way: MacBooks. We all use them. Except for Rosa.* It hasn't always been this way—a few of us are recent converts—but the fact of the matter is that Windows Vista couldn't handle the multitask demands of the field—running 3G while switching from Photoshop to a video editor to 15 different open tabs in Firefox, dealing with God knows what Web 2.0-related antics all the while. Maybe Windows 7 can be a great field-reporting platform, but at this point, it's all Mac.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- When Apple's(AAPL Quote) Steve Jobs speaks, investors need to do a better job of listening.
The Apple CEO's recent statement to the media got lost among the noise of Google(GOOG Quote) phone hype, 3D televisions, and the flood of 2010 predictions coming from market commentators. Although Jobs' statement was as plain as vanilla, it was probably the most profound forecast of the year and deserves some analysis. When announcing that the App Store had surpassed 3 billion downloads, Jobs finished with his crystal ball prediction: "We see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon."

But Steve, what about Google's latest attempt at an iPhone killer, the Nexus One? This super phone is lighter and has a better screen than the iPhone. The Google Voice capabilities are revolutionary. Shouldn't we be worried about these features? Hasn't the competition already caught up? Unfortunately for Google, Microsoft(MSFT Quote), Dell(DELL Quote), Palm(PALM Quote), Research In Motion(RIMM Quote), or any other company that considers itself a threat to Apple, Jobs isn't talking about features. If only it was that easy.

To compete with Apple, someone is going to have to scale a gated community. No one who lives in a great neighborhood wants to move. Would upgraded countertops be enough to get you to leave your great schools, parks and friends? For most people, once they find their ideal neighborhood, they never feel the need to leave, even if a better house becomes available across town. Apple customers feel the same way. The Apple community provides benefits beyond minor features of a single product. So what would a competitor have to do to disrupt this trend?

Μου κάνει τρομερή εντύπωση ότι ακόμη στις μέρες μας δεν το έχουν καταλάβει κόσμος και κοσμάκης το ρητό: "Once you go Mac you never go back".

In the wake of the launch of Google's Nexus One "super phone", Microsoft has attacked the company's mobile strategy. Google’s Android mobile phone software will struggle to make a major impact in the market now that the company has launched its own mobile phone, the Windows manufacturer has claimed.

Robbie Bach, the President of the company’s entertainment and devices division, said that so long as Google makes its own handsets, such as the new Nexus One, other phone manufacturers would hesitate to work with the Android mobile software platform because they would fear that they would never be a top priority for the search company.

“Doing both [software and hardware] in the way they are trying to do both is actually very, very difficult,” Bach said in an interview yesterday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. “Google’s announcement sends a signal where they’re going to place their commitment.”

When Google launched the Nexus One on Tuesday night, however, both Motorola and the phone’s manufacturer, HTC, joined the search giant on stage. Motorola Chief Executive Sanjay Jha confirmed that his company was already working on a range of new Android devices, even though many in the industry consider that the new Nexus One has largely stolen the thunder of the Motorola Droid handset.

NEW YORK - A famed strongman who once lifted 3,200 pounds at Coney Island during its heyday and was still bending quarters with his fingers at age 104 died Monday after he was hit by a minivan.

Joe Rollino was struck as he crossed a major street in Brooklyn, and suffered a broken pelvis, head trauma and broken ribs. He died a few hours later at an area hospital.

Police said the driver was going the speed limit and had not been drinking. No criminality is suspected, but the driver was issued a summons for a defective horn.

During his storied life, Rollino hobnobbed with Harry Houdini, watched Jack Dempsey knock out Jess Willard and was friendly with Mario Lanza. He even had a bit part in "On the Waterfront."

Rollino would have been 105 on March 19, and was the model of health, according to friends. A vegetarian for life, he didn't drink or smoke, his friends said, and he exercised every day. He was a lifetime boxer and was part of the Oldetime Barbell and Strongmen, an organization of men who can still rip book binders at the seam.

Your next PC may cost you a bit more than expected if you buy later this year. Market research masters Gartner say that the price of building PCs will climb this year, reversing a six-year trend, due to component scarcity. That's going to pose a bit of challenge to manufacturers who have focused on pumping out cheap netbooks during the economic downturn.

The biggest driver of the likely price increase is memory. The DRAM industry is in the midst of moving from DDR2 to DDR3, which means less of each type of RAM is being produced. DDR3 spot prices are up 23 percent over the last month; with memory comprising about a tenth of a PC's overall cost, that's a significant cost for OEMs to absorb.

It's not just RAM: LCD panels and hard drive prices are on the rise, with the cost of the former expected to jump by as much as 20 percent. Optical drives are also suffering from supply constraints.

As a result of the recession, component manufacturers reduced capacity and delayed building additional plants. While investment is on the way back up, it takes time for new facilities to come online. In the meantime, OEMs face a dilemma: how much of the additional costs can they pass on to consumers and businesses without scaring them away from new hardware?

Το ζώο Sharon Machlis VS Apple

Surely I can't be the only one noting the irony of Apple's iPhone marketing. You know, the "there's an app for that" ads that focus on how much software is available for its platform. After all, for years one of Apple's major roadblocks was that many more applications were available on Windows. But that wasn't supposed to matter for those noncomformist Mac users (at least until Intel systems let us run multiple operating systems on a Mac).

Now, it's Microsoft touting how great its OS software works. And Apple, the tech company that made its mark with a "think different" ad campaign, in the smartphone world promotes the fact that so many others have flocked to its platform.

There's nothing wrong with popularity (although it does seem odd to essentially be promoting your market share in one segment while hoping people will ignore it in another). And there are lots of things right with creating a platform that appeals to developers. But what you do with your rising clout is instructive. Apple is clearly the market leader in the electronic music world. And its decision to block the Palm Pre from syncing with iTunes is telling.

Εκεί έχουμε καταλήξει με το να είμαστε αδιάφοροι, αδιάβαστοι, κλπ. Να υποστηρίζουμε τις παρανομίες και τις αδικίες. Και όχι απλά να τις υποστηρίζουμε αλλά να τις κάνουμε νικητές των πάντων. Micro$oft κανείς;

Star Wars The Old Republic το 2011;

Riccitiello, discussed about the financial futures of the company. He gave the unfortunate news of 1,500 people being laid off, the economy and the holiday season not being nearly as good as they had hoped for. However, in a rare bit of information, he talked specifically about Star Wars: The Old Republic. Riccitiello said that they were planning the launch of “our major new MMO in spring 2011.”

He went on to say that, “As it stands today, the game is making great progress towards a spring 2011 launch. But given the volatility of this particular sector, and the fact that we haven’t yet provided a specific launch date, we will be excluding the revenue from our fiscal 2011 guidance plans.”

Since this was not a confirmed release date announcement, there has been considerable speculation about this. EA’s fiscal year 2011 ends on March 31, 2011. Therefore, the two questions that come up are: Is this going to be released in the fiscal year 2011 or is it being released in the year 2011. And, if it is being released in the spring of the fiscal year, does that actually mean second quarter of the fiscal year? Or, is it being released in March right before the end of the fiscal year to give EA some solid profits to report to investors at the end of the fourth quarter?

In September, BioWare started accepting applications for a closed Beta. Because betas go through so many different stages, it is difficult to tell which he is referring to.

The most likely outcome is that this game is going to be released in Spring of 2011. While there is a lot of speculation about it falling into the fiscal year, there is not enough evidence to back this claim up. Therefore, it is a TOR Universe Exclusive to suggest that the release date for Star Wars: The Old Republic will be in Spring of 2011.

Google VS Κίνας

Well, we've got to hand it to Google—the company's "don't be evil" schtick has long worn thin and governments around the globe are already probing its potential monopoly power, but who else would come out swinging against the entire Chinese government and announce an end to its own collaboration in censorship, all while recognizing that it could lose access to the entire Chinese market? And do it in a blog post?

This far but no further
The extraordinary announcement came this afternoon: Google has had it with China's pervasive web of censorship and spying, and the company is done censoring its search results in China. The decision wasn't made in a vacuum, but rather came after years of increasing cyberattacks from the Chinese mainland. A recent, massive infiltration attempt that targeted Google and 20 other tech companies was the final straw. Though Google stops short of naming the Chinese government as the party behind the attacks, the implication is clear.

In mid-December, we detected a highly sophisticated and targeted attack on our corporate infrastructure originating from China that resulted in the theft of intellectual property from Google. However, it soon became clear that what at first appeared to be solely a security incident—albeit a significant one—was something quite different.

The attack hit major companies in the "Internet, finance, technology, media, and chemical sectors" as well. Its goal was "accessing the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists," though it does not appear that anything more than subject lines were ever compromised. If that's not bad enough, Google also says it has acquired some intriguing evidence over the course of its investigation: "the accounts of dozens of U.S.-, China- and Europe-based Gmail users who are advocates of human rights in China appear to have been routinely accessed by third parties. These accounts have not been accessed through any security breach at Google, but most likely via phishing scams or malware placed on the users' computers."

We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn...
The sheer scope of such attacks is staggering. They show a coordinated effort to target specific human rights advocates not just in China but around the world, and to do so by attempting to infiltrate some of the world's most advanced computer networks belonging to some of the world's largest companies. (A Microsoft spokesperson tells Ars tonight, "We have no indication that any of our mail properties have been compromised." In response to some follow-up questions, we were told that the software giant would have no further comment.)

China has been well-known for going after the electronic communications of dissidents, and companies like Yahoo have in the past complied with Chinese government requests for e-mails. Those demands, however distasteful, at least followed a rough legal process in China. But Google's account indicates that, if the Chinese government is in fact linked to these recent attacks, it is willing to adopt extra-legal hacking in order to keep up its surveillance—and to do so anywhere in the world that communications of interest might be stored. Such a concerted program would be a marked escalation in the government's willingness to interfere in the operations of Internet companies in order to promote "stability."

Greenpeace VS Apple

Last year, Apple was being batted around the ears by Greenpeace for refusing to take part in its Electronics Survey. This year, Apple has changed its mind -- at least when it comes to having its overall environmental credentials rated -- and been lauded as a leading green player by Greenpeace campaigners.

Nokia and Sony Ericsson topped the rankings in the latest Guide To Greener Electronics, which ranks 18 global consumer electronics companies for the environmental impact of their products, including the use of hazardous substances, take-back schemes for obsolete products, and other initiatives to reduce climate impact within the business. The quarterly report was released at CES 2010.

Apple's improved ranking reflects a changing relationship with Greenpeace. "We like Apple, but we found a lot of their talk in the beginning of our work a bit duplicitous in terms of not walking their talk," said Greenpeace electronics analyst Casey Harrell. "I'm pleased to say that Apple has now hit that mark; new products they've put on the market are completely free of all of the most hazardous substances. Apple met their deadline full-on and early."

Intel's approach to processor marketing in recent years has been to de-emphasise performance numbers and rankings and focus on applications, but it was still something of a surprise to see it demonstrating how well its chips work by running iTunes.

During a press conference at CES 2010 to officially debut the company's line of 2010 processors (which have already been covered extensively by APC), Intel took the unusual approach of demonstrating the performance enhancements from its new improved ability to dispatch processor tasks by showing how quickly iTunes could launch and synchronise a video after an iPod was connected. "There's a subtle but significant improvement in performance because more tasks can be dispatched inside the processor cores," executive VP of Intel's architecture group Sean Maloney said.

iPod owners already know that the Windows version of iTunes is anything but an advertisement for good or stable application design, so as a benchmark of how a processor can help matters no matter what software is running this could prove quite informative. Unsurprisingly, the newer i5 processor was much quicker to finish the task than the older Core II Duo it was matched against.

The system depends on a "50-megabyte software package that can recognise 31 different body parts in any video frame," and will know, according to Kipman, if you put your hand behind your back.

At E3 2009, Project Natal was announced as a device that would run off of its own processor and was shown to work with highly-detailed, blazingly-fast racing game Burnout: Paradise. Rumors that Natal no longer has its own processor coupled with this report that Natal needs 10-15% of the 360's juice, raise questions about where a game that was made to push the 360 to its limits without Natal would be able to support the Natal peripheral. That would seemingly diminish the ability to connect Natal to the highest-end games, though that's speculation we'd need professional game developers to weigh in on. Only they know how much Xbox 360 horsepower their games require.

The report makes no mention of the Natal using its own processor, an element it was recently rumored has been dropped and would explain why the Natal is now drawing on the 360's processor.

Supporting that theory of a removed processor are changes made to Microsoft's official Natal fact sheet since E3.

E3 2009:

"Project Natal" sensor. "Project Natal" is the world's first system to combine an RGB camera, depth sensor, multiarray microphone and custom processor running proprietary software that brings "Project Natal" experiences to every Xbox 360 console.
