However, these slate devices were basically just full Windows 7 PCs in a small form factor with touchscreen functionality and no hardware keyboard. There wasn’t anything particularly innovative about them, even though the hardware designs were very attractive.
While the Slate PC demo was in the middle of the presentation and was certainly a featured segment for Ballmer, it was not a knock-out punch type of announcement. It was more of a shiny-new-thing announcement, and it shared a crowded spotlight with other Microsoft talk about Windows PCs, Microsoft Auto, and Xbox 360.
It would have been tough for anything to live up to the hype that developed over the past 24 hours. The New York Times claimed that Microsoft was preparing to announce a product in partnership with Hewlett-Packard that would “be touted as a multimedia whiz with e-reader and multi-touch functions.” The Wall Street Journal’s Kara Swisher threw cold water on that idea, saying Microsoft would simply be showing off its existing Windows 7 tablet functionality on new HP tablet hardware. The back-and-forth between the two rival publications helped created an atmosphere of expectation for the Ballmer keynote.
Adding to the anticipation, the event was delayed by 25 minutes for “power problems.” When Ballmer did finally make it out to the stage he said a couple things in his introduction that helped fuel the anticipation. He said, “We want to focus on the ever-evolving PC tonight” and also remarked that he wanted to talk about natural user interface (NUI) and the progress Microsoft is making in that area. While the NUI stuff refers partly to Project Natal (Microsoft’s new gaming interface), attendees couldn’t help but wonder if this also referred to the new tablet, especially since the Apple slate is rumored to have an innovative new UI.

Ο Sylvester Stallone τα σπάει!
AGING action hero Sylvester Stallone broke his neck while filming a fight scene with wrestler co-star "Stone Cold" Steve Austin in his latest movie.
The Rocky star has revealed he needed emergency surgery and a metal plate inserted in his neck after the accident on the set of The Expendables.
The 63-year-old told FHM magazine: "Man, it was seven guys, kicking each other's ass, one guy tougher than the next. No joke, our stunt guys were begging for mercy.
"Actually, my fight with 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin was so vicious that I ended up getting a hairline fracture in my neck. I'm not joking.
"I haven't told anyone this, but I had to have a very serious operation afterwards. I now have a metal plate in my neck."

Στην κυριολεξία τα σπάει δηλαδή ο άνθρωπος. Πέρα από την πλάκα όμως δεν μπορώ να περιμένω πως και πως να δω αυτή την ταινία που θα είναι κάτι ξεχωριστό μέσα στον ωκεανό του μοντέρνου κινηματογράφου που επιτάσσει τα εφέ των ηλεκτρονικών υπολογιστών, από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος της ταινίας, ακόμη και "σ' άχρηστα πράγματα".
Πρώτες εντυπώσεις του Nexus One
Some animations are very smooth, some are janky as hell. The Nexus One has a faster processor than the iPhone 3GS and has twice the RAM, and yet it still cannot have as fluid a UI as the iPhone OS. This is great proof that your software is key—throwing raw power at things won’t necessarily make them better.
The Android Market is a terrible mess. Nearly every app I looked at had nothing but spam comments. Literally things like, “Follow me on twitter at @blah” and “Ladies, hit me up on AIM at blah” which is embarrassing and sad. Makes the entire thing feel like cheap garbage. When you add the fact that nearly all the apps are free, and most are a UI mess, it doesn’t come off too well.
Sometimes the hardware buttons (Back, Menu, Home, Search) don’t respond right away, for whatever reason (software hang, working, etc) and since there’s no way to know if your touch simply wasn’t registered (which is also an issue I’m having from time to time) you end up pushing the button over and over. Then suddenly it will just work. To combat this, I turned on the vibration feedback option for those buttons, but that only partially helped—the phone still won’t vibrate after you push a button if it’s stuck doing something, so I end up pushing it over and over until I feel the vibration. This isn’t an issue on the iPhone because the only hardware button (the home button) is an actual button that clicks in when you push it. So you always know you’ve done so, and if nothing happens you know it’s a software issue.
No multi-touch. Or I should say, none “yet.” Android OS supports multi-touch and so does the hardware, but it has to be built into each app individually. The most obvious and annoying-that-it’s-not-there case is Maps. Zoom in and out buttons on a modern device like this just seems amateur.

Θα το ακούσετε πολλές φορές ακόμη. Καμία λύση εκεί έξω (ακόμη και αυτές που θα βγουν στο επόμενο τρίμηνο --τουλάχιστον), δεν πρόκειται ΚΑΝ να αγγίξει το iPhone. Φυσικά η Apple δεν κάθεται με σταυρωμένα τα χέρια και ετοιμάζει τον διάδοχο αυτού και ΟΧΙ μόνο.
Το γελοίο όμως με όλες τις αντίπαλες συσκευές του iPhone είναι η επερχόμενη ενσωμάτωση της νέας έκδοσης του Flash.
Μιλάμε για μια παντελώς γελοία κατάσταση που λίγο κάποιος να του κόβει, όχι μόνο το μάτι αλλά και το μυαλό, παρατηρεί το πόσο πολύ σέρνεται το Nexus One ΑΜΕΣΩΣ μόλις προσπαθεί να δείξει ακόμη και γελοία πράγματα σε Flash όπως τις απαίσιες διαδικτυακές διαφημίσεις. Και πριν προλάβετε να δικαιολογήσετε την κατάσταση λέγοντας ότι είναι Preview, Beta, κλπ. απλά να θυμίσω ότι το Flash είναι ήδη χάλια τεχνολογία παντού, που με κάθε έκδοση της, γίνεται ακόμη χειρότερη αυτή η απαίσια κατάσταση. Όχι δεν θα σωθεί ΟΥΤΕ με την επιτάχυνση σε επίπεδο κάρτας γραφικών, κλπ.
Και ψψψψτ; Adobe; Το 80% του διαδικτύου σε υλικό βίντεο μπορεί να είναι σε Flash αλλά δεν είναι σε ΑΠΛΟ Flash. Ευτυχώς σας φώτισε ο Θεός (Apple/Google) και ενσωματώσατε υποστήριξη για H.264. Οκ; Άντε γιατί Α!!!
David Pogue και Nexus One
Despite these goodies, the Nexus is missing some important features that iPhone fans take for granted. For starters, the Google app store is much smaller, featuring 18,000 fun little games; there are well over 100,000 for the iPhone.
Worse, even if you find a lot of good ones, you might not have anywhere to install them. The Nexus can accommodate memory cards up to 32 gigabytes (a 4-gigabyte card comes with it) — and yet, inexplicably, the Nexus allots only a tiny 190 megabytes of storage for downloaded apps.

The idea of the Google phone store is pure, giddy idealism: You’ll buy the phone you want, then you’ll shop for the cell plan you want, from the carrier you want. No more “You want an iPhone? Then you get AT&T.”
Well, it’s about time! Rise up in the streets! Power to the people! Truth shall triumph!
Or not.
I mean, it’s a great idea and all. It’s just that, well, apart from the iPhone, who really cares which carrier has a certain phone? In the list of complaints about American cellphone carriers sent to me by readers, that one is waaaaaay down the list.
Besides, the Google phone store doesn’t really do much to solve the problem. In this country, there are two competing network formats. There’s C.D.M.A. (used by Verizon and Sprint) and there’s G.S.M. (favored by AT&T and T-Mobile and most other countries).
The current Nexus One is a G.S.M. phone. So when you buy it online, you get the following vast menu of carriers: T-Mobile. (Or you can use AT&T, but you have to supply your own subscriber card, and you won’t get 3G Internet speed.)
Wow, that changes everything, doesn’t it?

Ο καυστικός και τρομερά ιδιοφυής David Pogue γι άλλη μια φορά δεν τα μασάει και τα χώνει και στην Google και στις εταιρίες κινητής τηλεφωνίας, ενώ ρίχνει και κάνα 2-3 μπιχτές και στην Apple. Μόνο ο κ.David Pogue μπορεί να τα κάνει αυτά και ταυτόχρονα να τον γουστάρουν όλοι :P

... και η τυφλή εμπιστοσύνη σ' αυτήν, σε κάνει πολύ πιο γρήγορα από ποτέ, να αισθάνεσαι ΠΟΛΥ μαλάκας. Και να μην αισθάνεσαι. Είσαι. Ε ναι! Πως αλλιώς μέσα σε 2-3 μήνες να θεωρείτε πολλοί από εσάς σωτήρα της τεχνολογίας των υπολογιστών την Micro$oft και τον Steve Ballmer;
It could be one of Steve Ballmer’s riskiest trade-show moves in years.
On Wednesday, Mr. Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive, will unveil a novel take on a slate-type computer during his evening keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, according to people familiar with Microsoft’s plans. The slate will be made by Hewlett-Packard and possibly available by mid-year, these people said.
This product better be good because Apple is expected to unveil its take on the slate/tablet form factor later this month. If history holds, Apple will issue a product that surprises people in a few ways and that stands out from the crowd.
So the last thing Mr. Ballmer wants to hold up is a me-too device.
Press representatives from Microsoft and H.P. declined to comment on the product or the content of Mr. Ballmer’s speech.
My sources, however, say that Mr. Ballmer will show the as-yet-unnamed H.P. device, which will be touted as a multimedia whiz with e-reader and multi-touch functions.
Last fall, some photos emerged of a Microsoft tablet/slate prototype device.
It remains tough to tell where Microsoft’s work ends and H.P.’s begins on this type of product. But all eyes will be on Mr. Ballmer this week to see if Microsoft and H.P. can out-Apple Apple before Apple Apples.

Δεν μπορώ να το πιστέψω. Πως είναι δυνατόν να πιστεύει κανείς ότι η Micro$oft θα κάνει κάτι καλό πραγματικά απορώ. Μιλάμε για την εταιρία που έχει κάνει σημαία την αποτυχία. Σε ΟΛΟΥΣ τους τομείς!!! Σταματήστε την καραμέλα του ότι έχει το 90% της αγοράς. ΑΠΛΑ δεν το έχει. Ακόμη και να το είχε, τι να λέει; Και η Αμερική κάνει κουμάντο σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο αλλά δεν σημαίνει ότι είναι καλή χώρα, ότι αγαπάει όλο τον κόσμο και ότι παλεύει για την παγκόσμια ευτυχία και ειρήνη. ΕΛΕΟΣ δηλαδή. ΖΩΑ ε ΖΩΑ!
Φυσικά, πολύ απλά η πραγματικότητα είναι σκληρή με τους τυφλωμένους με την Micro$oft. Ανακοίνωσαν την παπαριά της HP και δεν είναι παρά μόνο ένα ακόμη Tablet PC με τα Windows 7. Που ΔΕΝ είναι διαθέσιμο ακόμη. Που ΘΑ είναι. Που δεν ξέρουμε επιδόσεις, κοστολόγια, κλπ. Γι άλλη μια φορά ΘΑ σώσει τον κόσμο η Micro$oft, ΚΑΠΟΙΑ στιγμή. ΑΡΓΟΤΕΡΑ.

HP says they'll provide information on the slate after the keynote, but wouldn't say anything in the meantime. We're calling it a "slate"—well, Microsoft is calling it a slate, to differentiate from the pen-and-screen dealy that Bill Gates intro'd in 2001—but that's not its name.
It's a Windows 7 touch device, so it's nice in an accessible, netbooky (yeah, I'm guessing relatively cheap) context. But it's not exactly the Courier we have lusted after from Microsoft in our dreams

Αυτό όμως που θα πρέπει τα ζώα να αποκωδικοποιήσουν είναι οι πουστιές της Micro$oft. Πως αποκαλούσε ξανά και ξανά ο Steve Ballmer τα Tablet PCs στην CES 2010; Slate PCs... Πιο προϊόν γνωστής εταιρίας αλλά και κατοχύρωση ιστοσελίδας του πιθανού αυτού προϊόντος φέρει το όνομα iSlate και περιμένουμε να ανακοινωθεί τέλος του μήνα; Ίσως την έχετε ακουστά βρε. Μια ασήμαντη εταιριούλα. Την Apple. Τι έκανε η Micro$oft; Ακούει τις φήμες για το iSlate (ή όπως αλλιώς τελικά θα λέγεται όπως και να είναι αυτό το νέο προϊόν) της Apple τον τελευταίο καιρό η Micro$oft και ΝΥΧΤΑ αλλάξανε την ορολογία που επί χρόνια χρησιμοποιούν των άχρηστων και πεταμένων Tablet PCs, σε Slate PCs. Τι να πω; Υποθέτω πως αν δεν μπορείς να τους νικήσεις, συμμετείχε στο παιχνίδι τους. Έτσι σκέφτεται ξεκάθαρα η Micro$oft από τη στιγμή της δημιουργίας της. Γιατί ν' αλλάξει τώρα; Εφόσον τα ζώα αγοράζουν; Μπεεεε!
Δεν ξέρω πως θα είναι και πότε θα είναι κάποιο από τα νέα προϊόντα της Apple αλλά για ένα πράγμα είμαι σίγουρος... Σε αντίθεση με τις λύσεις της Windows βιομηχανίας, θα δουλεύει. Έτσι απλά.

Άντε βρε. Μπράβο. Τώρα, θα ρίξετε λίγο ακόμη την τιμή του PS3 για να βάλετε γι άλλη μια φορά την φαντασμένη την Micro$oft για τα καλά στη θέση της; Όχι τίποτα άλλο. Αλλά δεν θα προχωρήσει και το Blu Ray σας αλλιώς.
